Iowa State University Students Visit Senator Grassley, Promote Alternative Energy

Posted:
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Grassley Release) -Tim Lentz, Scott Schrage, Aaron Brncich, Jennifer Ross, Laura Katzin, and Professor Ulrike Passe, of Iowa State University, visited with Senator Chuck Grassley during a recent trip to Washington, D.C.

"I enjoyed meeting with the Iowa State Solar Decathlon Team," Grassley said. "I was very interested to hear about their project on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and their ideas about energy conservation and renewable energy."

The Iowa State Solar Decathlon team was in Washington participating in the 2009 Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon.  The competition helps promote solar energy through the building and displaying of fully solar-powered homes on the National Mall.  The teams were judged in ten categories throughout the week-long competition.  Iowa State began the project nearly two years ago.  The ISU house finished 5th in the engineering ranking and 6th in the energy balance ranking.  Overall, the ISU team secured a 12th place finish.

Meeting with young people has been a priority for Grassley throughout his service in the U.S. Senate.  He enjoys meeting with nearly 60 groups of students every year.
